Biblical Commentary: Catena Aurea

The Biblical commentary style of the Catena is quite ancient. It uses a pretty standard pattern: quote the scripture, then give quotes from the Church Fathers and other sources to explain the meaning of the passage. While it is certainly possible to read through the writings of the Church Fathers to explain a certain passage of the Gospels, not everyone has the time or the resources to do so. With this format, you can compare the writings of St. Augustine with those of St. Jerome

St. Thomas Aquinas gave a masterful edition of this classic Biblical Commentary. Not only does he show a masterful knowledge of the Church Fathers; his ability to emphasize various points of doctrine through the choice and arrangement of quotes is second to none.
